このコラムで舟運の基本情報と英語表現を予習しちゃいましょう！
What’s “Shuun”? 舟運とは？
“Shuun” means ship mail or boat transportation.
舟運とは船便もしくは船の運送を意味します。
Kawagoe is surrounded by river.
During the Edo period, especially after the first big fire in 1638, the boat was the best transport system between Kawagoe and Edo, present Tokyo.
川越は川で囲まれています。
江戸時代、特に1638年の最初の川越大火の後、舟が川越と現在の東京である江戸との間を行き来する一番の運送システムでした。
Because of the large capacity carried by boats, various items such as heavy rice bags, vegetables including sweet potatoes, and rolls of Kawagoe Tozan kimono fabric were frequently transported to Edo until the railway system was developed in the early Meiji period.
Kawagoe then became one of the important suppliers for Edo.
舟が大容量運搬できたので、重い米俵や さつまいもなどの野菜、そして川越唐桟の反物といった様々な品が、明治時代初期に鉄道が発達するまで頻繁に江戸まで運ばれていました。
そのため川越は江戸の重要な仕入れ先の１つとなりました。
With the boat transport system, Edo culture, trend items, and Kurazukuri-style architecture were brought into Kawagoe.
舟運と共に、江戸文化や最新トレンドアイテム、そして蔵造り建築も川越に持ち込まれました。
What’s “Shuyu” in spring?
春の周遊とは？
In spring, Koedo Kawagoe Spring Festival is held, and you can enjoy the traditional boat ride （river cruise）in Shingashi River.
It starts behind Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom.
The boatman rows a Japanese boat for you!
春に小江戸川越春まつりが開催され、新河岸川で伝統的な和舟の川下りが楽しめます。
桜が満開の時に川越氷川神社の裏で行われ、船頭さんが舟を漕いでくれるんです！
No reservations required, and the boarding is first-come-first-go, so you need to wait in line.
The fee is tip-based, starts from 500 yen. It’s a beautiful and memorable cruise you’ve ever been!
予約制ではなく、来た人から乗車となるので列に並ぶ必要があります。料金はチップ制で¥500から。
今まで乗ったことがない程 美しくて記念に残る素晴らしい川下りです！
