Merry Christmas!
もうすぐクリスマスですね。意外と知らない日米の違い、ご紹介します。
The Christmas season is so long.
People have been Christmas shopping since Thanksgiving.
We’ll see Christmas decorations and lights all over town until New Year’s Day.
The “Holiday Season” lasts for more than two months.
クリスマスシーズンは長い。みんな感謝祭（11月第4木曜日）からクリスマスショッピングに大忙し。
デコレーションやイルミネーションが街中で見られ年が明けるまで続きます。
ホリデーシーズンは２ヶ月以上続くのです。
Mom: I used to take Doug to the shopping mall so he could get his picture taken with Santa.
Doug: Yeah, I went there to tell Santa what I wanted.
Mai : Doug, when you were little, did you believe in Santa Claus?
Doug: Yes, I did, maybe only until I was about seven. I used to put milk and cookies out for him on Christmas Eve before I went to bed.
I left a note that said, “For Santa.”
お母さん： サンタと一緒の写真を撮りに、ダグを連れてショッピングモールに行ったものよ。
ダグ ： うん、サンタに何が欲しいか言いたかったんだ。
舞 ： ダグ、子供の頃サンタクロース信じてた？
ダグ ： うん、たぶん7才くらいまでかな。 イブには寝る前にサンタのためにミルクとクッキーを置いとくんだ。
紙に「サンタへ」って書いてね。
Jim: Look! I’ll show you what I got from Santa.
Mai: You opened your presents already?
Jim: Only the stocking stuffers and gifts from Santa.
Dad: We open those first things on Christmas morning.
Then we open the rest of the gifts with everyone here in the afternoon.
ジム ： ねえ、見て！サンタからもらったんだよ。
舞 ： もうプレゼント開けちゃったの？
ジム ： 靴下に入っていたのとサンタからのプレゼントだけだよ。
お父さん ：それだけはクリスマスの朝一番に開けていいことになっているんだ。他のギフトは午後みんなで開けるんだよ。
Jane: We give Holiday cards or presents to our co-workers, bosses, and secretaries.
Students also give presents to school teachers.
And we also give a tip to our mailman, newspaper delivery person, and the garbage collector to show our appreciation.
If you live in an apartment, you always give a tip to the super and the doorman.
And of course boyfriends and girlfriends exchange presents.
ジェーン： 私たちは仕事の同僚、上司、秘書なんかにもホリデーカードやプレゼントを渡すの。
学生は学校の先生にプレゼントをあげます。
郵便や新聞配達の人、ゴミ回収の人にも感謝を込めてチップ、
アパートに住んでいたら、管理人やドアマンに必ずチップをあげます。
そしてもちろん恋人同士はプレゼントの交換をするわね。
クリスマスケーキは日本のもの、アメリカでは見かけません。
ツリーや星、サンタなどクリスマスにちなんだものを型どってアイシングでデコレーションしたクリスマスクッキーをたくさん焼きます。
クッキーなら長もちしますしね。
クリスマスはイエス・キリストの誕生日。クリスチャンのお祝いです。
アメリカにはユダヤ教徒やその他いろいろな宗教の人がいます。
アメリカの公立学校ではクリスマスのお祝いはしないんですよ。
相手がクリスチャンかどうかわからないときは
Merry Christmas! ではなく
Happy Holidays! と言うといいでしょう。
